Total national cotton production in 2016 was 5.343 million tons, down 4.6% from last year

According to the National Bureau of Statistics website, the total national cotton production in 2016 was 5.343 million tons, a decrease of 26.0 million tons or 4.6% compared with 2015.

According to the statistical survey of 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country (the cotton sown area in Xinjiang was obtained through telemetry), the national cotton sown area, unit area production and total production in 2016 are as follows.

First, the national cotton sown area of 3376.1 thousand hectares (50,642,000 mu), a decrease of 420.5 thousand hectares (6.308 million mu) than in 2015, down 11.1%.

Second, the national cotton unit area yield of 1582.5 kg/ha (105.5 kg/mu), an increase of 106.5 kg/ha (7.1 kg/mu) over 2015, an increase of 7.2%.

Third, the total national cotton production of 5.343 million tons, a decrease of 26.0 million tons or 4.6% from 2015.

A note on the cotton yield survey system and methodology

Total national cotton production for the 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) and the total cotton.

  (A) survey method

Cotton production statistics survey to take remote sensing measurement of the main production areas, sampling, non-main production areas, a combination of a full range of statistical methods, survey objects include plots, agricultural production and business households and business units. Xinjiang by means of remote sensing measurement to obtain the area, sampling survey to obtain the yield; Hebei, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan cotton by the National Bureau of Statistics assigned to the General Investigation Team is responsible for carrying out a sample survey to hunt for area and yield data, the other provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) Statistics Bureau to hunt for cotton area and yield data through a full range of statistics.

7 cotton production areas (excluding Xinjiang) sample survey objects are agricultural production and operation households, through the province as a whole selected representative village groups, farmers and plots to carry out the survey, the sown area survey is in the survey point in time on all cotton sown area within the sample point to investigate, the actual sown area of cotton is projected. Unit area yield survey adopts the method of field measurement and household visits to project the unit area yield. Area and unit yield are multiplied to obtain the total yield.

Since 2014, the National Bureau of Statistics has carried out cotton remote sensing measurement in Xinjiang, through high and medium spatial resolution multi-temporal satellite remote sensing images combined with ground sampling survey, with agricultural land blocks as the survey object, measuring to obtain the cotton planting area on agricultural land in the region. The area obtained through cotton remote sensing measurement and sampling survey accounts for more than 95% of the total cotton planting area in China.

  (II) Survey samples

Xinjiang cotton telemetry field survey contains more than 2130 samples totaling nearly 290,000 acres of survey plots; 7 cotton sampling survey provinces in 138 national survey counties to carry out surveys, cotton area survey a total of more than 700 village groups, more than 80,000 farm households; cotton unit area yield survey to extract more than 700 village groups, more than 7,000 farm households, by the National Bureau of Statistics of the grassroots survey team investigators and auxiliary investigators to implement. The rest of the provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) to adopt a full range of statistical methods, through layers of statistics to obtain data reported.

  (C) actual measurement methods

In accordance with the "statistical reporting system of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery", the main cotton varieties unit area yield survey were adopted in the field measurement and household yield measurement methods.

Field measurement in the randomly selected area survey sample points to carry out the survey, cotton maturity near the time, the sample points in all the plots to estimate the yield, according to the plot yield level through the area of the inventory sorted after equidistant sampling, selected five representative plots as the actual measurement plots. After the maturity of cotton, 3 small sample squares were selected manually in the field, and cotton yield was obtained by counting peaches, weighing, approving losses and other methods of investigation.

Household yield measurement in the randomly selected area survey sample points to carry out the survey, cotton maturity near the end of the sample point, all households in the plot to estimate the yield, according to the estimated yield of each plot obtained by the average yield level of each household, after the maturity of cotton, through the average yield of each household by area inventory equidistant sampling method, selected 10 households, after the end of cotton picking, into the survey households of the cotton sowing area, the Harvesting, selling, storage, self-use, etc. to register and calculate the level of yields. The National Bureau of Statistics survey team according to the sample plot yields in the province (district, city) average unit area yield.
